Essential steps when dealing with a bee hive

When you see a nightmarish beehive anywhere near your home, your first instinct would be to get the nearest stick and just break it over. Obviously, this will end up with some severe bee attack. So, keep calm and go over these steps to know exactly what to do.

1. Give some space

If you’re dealing with a swarm of angry bees that can sting mercilessly, it’s best for you to not provoke them in any way at all. Making them feel threatened will only escalate things to something even more uncontrollable. Your smartest move is to put some distance between you, your pets, children, and anyone that are allergic to stings. And, yes, that means if the bees are in your home, you immediately isolate the area.  There’s no telling when the bees would strike so, don’t take any chances.

2. Put on safety gear

This isn’t the most ideal solution, but if you’re on a mission to take down the hive yourself, then, please take all the safety precautions. Put on clothing that has a smooth texture and light color, preferably white. To protect your head and neck, get some thick gloves and a hat with a long veil. Seal the openings of your sleeves and pant legs. Make sure you don’t have a scent that attracts the bees like perfume, cologne, scented deodorant, and lotion.  For people with bee allergies, it’s highly recommended that you don’t attempt this. Get your local pest control service to help instead.

3. Locate the source

If you’re in luck, the hive might be hanging somewhere in plain sight and easily reachable. When you get to a close yet safe distance, observe the way the hive is attached to the structure. And, then come up with a good, safe plan to detach and remove it. Remember not to block access to the hive. That will only make the bees escape into other areas of your home. Your worst case scenario is if the hive is hidden in the walls of your house, birdhouse, or garbage cans. That’s way too risky and it leaves you with no choice but to contact the professionals.

4. No insecticides or traps

Like with any other insects, you might figure spraying down the hive with insecticide is a good idea. Those who are more daring might even go as far as catching the bees inside a trap. News flash: both are terrible ideas. Your recommended move is to use a bee smoker to calm the bees. It’s probably available at a garden store near you. When the bees are still, you can move the hive without damaging it or harming the bees. Or, you can also vacuum the bees from the interiors of walls and empty the contents of the vacuum cleaner somewhere far from your home like unpopulated areas. When the bees and hive are gone, clean up the honey and other residues that might be there. Repair any damaged walls and seal entry points to block any returning bees.

5. Get professional help

In a number of cases, DIY steps aren’t the safest or most effective to do. That’s the signal to finally call a certified local pest control service. The professionals are highly trained to handle insects with bad stings like bees. Plus, they have the specialized tools and protective suits that are needed to do the deed unscathed. The best part of it all is that the experts could even remove the nest without affecting the bees and its home. When it comes to bee hives, no one is the same. The hives differ in size, location, and the species of the bees. Experts will implement the best removal method that goes with your situation. For really high or inaccessible hives, the experts will use a ladder and a special bee pole to get rid of it.
